Vice-President steps in to ensure 'fair' council polls at DU

The Vice-President of India and Chancellor of Delhi University Hamid Ansari has stepped in to insure free and fair Academic Council (AC) elections in the university, following a case of bungling during a council election held in 2006.

In a letter to the university, dated December 5, Ansari has written that his criticism should be quoted in full in its notification regarding his decision to ensure "that there are no future election disputes of this nature".

The letter was sent in response to a complaint filed by Vijay Singh, a reader of History at Satyawati College, who was affected directly when another candidate, Gopal Rana, with a lesser number of votes than him was elected as an AC member. Officials at the university protected Rana from elimination, saying he represented the non-medical faculty. They overlooked the fact that earlier a woman candidate had already been elected under this clause, Singh alleged.

Singh had been continuously making pleas and representations to the Chancellor's office seeking his intervention.

Ansari's letter was sent after two years of correspondence between Vijay Singh and the Chancellor's office, which also included the latter's call for a re-count that was duly ignored.

The letter states that because the council's two year-term has come to an end, Vijay Singh's election will serve no purpose. But the "wilful misrepresentations of facts by the Registrar of the University are a serious matter, particularly in an electoral process."

Vijay Singh has said he will once again contest the Academic Council elections, slated to be held on December 19. He, however, said this would be his last time as he is retiring in another three years. "I can only say that the administration was politically motivated in going against my election," he said.
